The publication “Der Stoff der Malerei” (Grounds for Painting) accompanies a series of exhibitions in Germany dedicated to Claude Viallat in 2013, including Situation Kunst in Bochum, Ludwig Museum Koblenz, and Kunsthalle Rostock. Although his work has long been highly regarded in France and around the world, it has rarely been shown in Germany.

In the 1960s, Claude Viallat freed the canvas from its frame. Since then, he has been painting his series of shapes on every imaginable fabric: tablecloths, sheets, tents, jute bags, awnings, etc. These are often used textiles that have clearly already served other purposes and bear traces of this use. Viallat responds with equal parts sensitivity and virtuosity and a grandiose richness of color to the challenge posed by the fabric in question; his painting resembles a constantly renewed dialogue with the material.
