Out of Square illustrates Vera Molnar's approach of introducing a degree of controlled disorder into rigorous geometric structures. Through subtle variations on the square, the artist explores the limits of regularity and the possibilities offered by algorithms for generating new forms.

Based on a 1974 project, this edition is formatted on a medium that offers new visual possibilities. Tracing paper sidesteps the problem inherent in the tradition of books, whose purpose has always been, quite logically, not to overprint text. With “Out of Square,” there are no more “false pages” or “beautiful pages,” as one is the other, being the one to come, and on 5 to 6 pages... With the transparency of tracing paper, all hierarchy is removed in favor of a continuum offered to the adventures of a geometric figure: the square.

This artist's book stands out for its materiality: the use of tracing paper gives it a transparency that allows shapes to overlap, creating complex visual interactions. The black cardboard jacket offers a striking contrast to the delicacy of the interior pages, emphasizing the experimental aspect of the work.
