The artist has developed a unique pictorial language, combining painting, drawing, collage, and montage, blending forms and blurring boundaries. For nearly forty years, Christian Bonnefoi's work has occupied a singular place in the field of painting and, more generally, in the history of contemporary art.

His work is characterized by a unique approach to collage, whose assembly produces a surface that becomes the very object of the work without any figuration, suggestion, or narration: a way of emphasizing the importance of the process, of the work of composition on the final result. The artist traces the origins of his artistic approach to his discovery of Matisse's “Dos” (Backs), presented in 1970 at the Grand Palais in Paris during the exhibition “Henri Matisse, l'exposition du centenaire” (Henri Matisse, the Centennial Exhibition), which inspired his first Dos four years later. This theme has punctuated his work ever since.
