The catalog “Tableaux: la peinture n'est pas un genre” (Paintings: Painting is not a Genre) accompanies a traveling exhibition presented in 1999 in three French museums: the Musée des Jacobins in Morlaix (February 5–March 31), the Musée de Brou in Bourg-en-Bresse (April 9 - June 13) and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Tourcoing (November - December).
Conceived by curators Evelyne-Dorothée Allemand, Patrick Jourdan, Marie-Françoise Poiret, and Tristan Trémeau, this collective project questions the place of painting in the contemporary artistic landscape. By asserting that “painting is not a genre,” the exhibition and its catalog challenge traditional classifications of art, offering a reflection on painting as an autonomous and evolving artistic practice. It offers critical analyses, reproductions of works, and a detailed bibliography (pages 93 to 102), providing a deeper understanding of the issues addressed.
