Galerie Oniris Pays Tribute to Vera Molnar at Art Paris 2025

For the 27th edition of Art Paris Art Fair, Galerie Oniris presents a solo exhibition dedicated to Vera Molnar (1924–2023), a leading figure in geometric abstraction and a pioneer of digital art.

Located at booth F7 at the Grand Palais, from Thursday, April 3 to Sunday, April 6, 2025, this presentation is part of the fair's Solo Show programme. It pays tribute to an artist whose work has profoundly influenced the history of contemporary art and the relationship between artistic creation and digital technologies.

Following the monographic exhibition "Parler à l'œil", presented at the Centre Pompidou in Paris in early 2024, Galerie Oniris continues to showcase her work. Since the artist's death in December 2023, the gallery has been responsible for managing her studio collection.

Vera Molnar: A Pioneer of Digital Art and Geometric Abstraction

Born in Hungary in 1924, Vera Molnar is regarded as one of the pioneers of generative art and the use of computers in artistic creation.

From the 1950s onwards, she developed an artistic practice centred on geometric abstraction, lines, squares and the transformation of shapes. Her work is based on a methodical exploration of visual structures, repetitions and variations, in which an initial rule can gradually give rise to unexpected results.

Vera Molnar explored the possibilities offered by elementary shapes and colour variations: white, black, grey, blue and red. Through successive displacements, distortions and transformations, she created compositions in which mathematical rigour meets the freedom of the imagination.

Her distinctive approach is built around a fruitful tension between order and disorder, programming and intuition, logic and chance.

Computer-Generated Drawings: The Early Beginnings of Contemporary Digital Art

The exhibition presented by Galerie Oniris at Art Paris 2025 notably highlights the computer-generated drawings Vera Molnar began creating in the 1970s.

Long before the emergence of NFTs and blockchain-based artistic practices, the artist was already exploring the creative possibilities of computing. She used the computer as a genuine tool for artistic research, capable of generating variations, multiplying combinations and opening up new possibilities for drawing.

These experiments demonstrate her pioneering role in the history of digital and generative art.

The selection presented at the Grand Palais offers an opportunity to discover the different facets of her work: from her explorations of geometric abstraction to compositions resulting from her computer-based experiments.
