Vera Molnar, Meules en hommage à Claude Monet-A, 2013
Vera Molnar, Meules en hommage à Claude Monet-A, 2013

In Spring 2016, Vera Molnar returns to Rennes for an exhibition entitled "Lignes ou Meules?", a collection of recent works (paintings, hand and computer drawings and photographs) in homage to Claude Monet's "Meules" series.

It is in 2013, precisely at the birth of summer, on 21 June, that an extraordinary work-programme burst into the city. In black on a white canvas, three areas filled with the same small strokes, whose inclinations only vary, make up the ground, the millstone and the background. The passage from one zone to the other is imperceptible if one looks too closely, it becomes more pronounced in retrospect. But what is tastiest is that these small segments of straight line, which are the most abstract, minimal, inexpressive form imaginable, immediately appear as so many fetuses of straw happily intermingled, evoking the heat of summer to the point where one thinks one can hear the buzzing of the bees. This painting entitled "Meule, en hommage à Monet" (1977-2013) paradoxically rediscovers an essential principle of Impressionism when it uses only the line and no colour.
