Brankica Žilović: Séisme
Franco-Serbian artist Brankica Žilović unfolds a universe where memory, territory and transmission take shape through matter.
Using textiles, embroidery and hybrid materials such as concrete and paper, she explores notions of borders - be they geographical, political or intimate - and questions what remains and what disappears.
In her work, Brankica Žilović draws a cartography in perpetual mutation, a reading of the world in constant transformation that raises a series of fundamental questions: What is the individual? What is the collective?
Brankica Žilović reinvents tapestry by freeing it from its classical forms. She turns it into a living, hybrid medium, somewhere between drawing, cartography and textile sculpture. By combining thread with other materials, she transforms every stitch of embroidery into a gesture of memory, every stitch into a link between the intimate and the collective. Inspired by traditional skills while incorporating experimental techniques, she gives her works a sensory and political charge. Textiles become traces, scars and shifting territories.
Through her works, Brankica Žilović sketches a new cartography of the world. A geography of memory where each seam, each taut thread, each imprint on the material questions who we are, what we pass on, and what we choose to leave behind.
"Séisme", Brankica Žilović's first solo exhibition at Oniris gallery, to be discovered in Rennes from April 26 to June 7, 2025
