Soo Kyoung Lee: solo show
The Oniris Gallery is presenting the third solo exhibition by Franco-Korean painter Soo-Kyoung Lee, from September 18 to October 31, 2026, in Rennes.
Self-taught, with a background in French literature from Seoul and Paris, Soo-Kyoung Lee has developed an abstract and spontaneous painting practice rooted in the immediacy of the gesture.
Her work is part of an abstract and spontaneous practice, free from any prior preparation. For her, thought and action are inseparable: the gesture becomes the very place where the painting emerges. In this continuous flow, the image is not projected; it simply comes into being.
Her works, built through successive layers, play on a subtle balance between appearance and disappearance. Shapes and colors emerge, overlap, and transform in a process that combines mastery and the unexpected. Rejecting any interpretation, the artist advocates for a painting liberated from all prior intention.
For several years, she has incorporated wood into her practice, introducing relief and materiality, while engaging in a personal dialogue with certain Korean traditions.
Bringing together paintings and recent works, the exhibition highlights the evolution of Soo-Kyoung Lee’s work, while affirming the uniqueness and vitality of her visual language.
