Overview

Didier Mencoboni is above all a colorist. Color is the essence of his work. His work responds to three essential points: abstraction, concept and color. It is made up of both small and large formats and periodically calls for different supports such as canvas, paper, fabric, mirror, even Plexiglas and other materials.

Like a musician who composes exclusively in the mode of variation, Mencoboni multiplies the formal games and chromatic combinations in order to broaden the register of expression of painting.

Since the 1990s, he has devoted himself to the ...Etc... series, small format paintings that occupy him daily. To this day, this series counts more than 2300 paintings, which are a way of getting acquainted with painting and taming it. For the artist, painting small pictures in large quantities is a way to never finish, and to produce a single piece itself composed of an infinite series that becomes an elusive object.

On the occasion of his second solo exhibition at the Oniris gallery entitled "S'y perdre, encore", Didier Mencoboni exhibits a set of unpublished works from two series, one on paper that he has been working on for several years and a set of small untitled oil paintings of which the artist specifies:

"I hadn't done oil paintings since my student days. For this series of paintings, acrylic did not allow a technically satisfactory result. I rediscovered oil painting with its material, its relief and its shine."

On the occasion of his second solo exhibition at the Oniris gallery entitled "S'y perdre, encore", Didier Mencoboni exhibits a set of unpublished works from two series, one on paper that he has been pursuing for several years and a set of small oil paintings, Sans Titre.

The choice of a wooden support brings a soft and warm aspect to the painting unlike canvas. The tension is without surprise unlike the canvas. The plane of the painting is deliberately offset from the wall thanks to the bevel on the side. The rounding and the bevel present a flat support of which it remains only the colored surface with a shadow carried. The formats are "approximately identical" which contributes to the uniqueness of each work.

In this presentation, one remains in the same series with a unit of format from which one retains a colored frequency and an experience of proximity to appreciate the detail.
