Overview

French artist Didier Mencoboni was born in 1959

He lives and works in Ivry sur Seine

His work is exhibited at the Oniris gallery since 2016

Didier Mencoboni's work is resolutely colourful and abstract. It is the result of a consideration of the occupation and overcoming of space. For him, painting is born from the frame, but tends to escape from it. It is not only about the painting, but about what is around it. His relationship to painting as a material may seem complex, as he sees it as a tool that is difficult to grasp.

I attempt to make paintings that respond to my perception of this medium and, more broadly in its place, its ability to be relevant today. I thus take several paths under the convent of colour that express the complexity and multiplicity of the world and of individuals. I would add that this bias [...] has had the consequence of being more attached to the sum of the paintings than to each unit.

Didier Mencoboni is looking for the best way to use paint, and this pursuit of the perfect work, a quest that seems lost in his eyes, is understandable when one is faced with his important painting production. In this sense, the series "...Etc..." deeply marks his work. Since the 1990's, these small format paintings have occupied him on a daily basis by period. To date, this series counts more than 2000 paintings, which are a way to get acquainted with painting and to tame it.

For the artist, painting small paintings in large quantities is a way of never ending, of producing a single piece itself composed of an infinite sequence that becomes an elusive object. Parallel to this series, Didier Mencoboni explores other materials, such as ink applied with an industrial tool, cut paper, or other supports such as fabric or Plexiglas. We find in his work a recurring basic form, the dot, which is a way of escaping the question of form in order to concentrate on technique and space.

The occupation of space, which is a central issue in Didier Mencoboni's work, can also be observed through three-dimensional volumes, as shown in his mobiles entitled Révolutions.
