To mark its first participation in Art Basel, which will take place in Basel, Switzerland, in mid-June, the Oniris Gallery is celebrating a major milestone in its history, coinciding with its 40th anniversary. This debut at one of the most prestigious fairs on the international art scene underscores the gallery’s commitment to contemporary art and its most innovative forms.
As part of the new section dedicated to digital art, titled « Zero 10 », Oniris is partnering with Interface Gallery to present a solo exhibition by the Franco-Hungarian artist Vera Molnar. This exhibition pays tribute to a key figure in art history, whose work has profoundly shaped the development of digital practices.
In early 2024, the Centre Pompidou dedicated a solo exhibition to the artist titled “ Speaking to the Eye», bringing together works from its collections. Since Vera Molnar’s passing in 2023, the Oniris Gallery has been managing her studio collection, thereby continuing vital conservation and promotion efforts.
A pioneer in the use of the computer as a creative tool, Vera Molnar has been engaged since the 1950s in a rigorous exploration of geometric abstraction. She developed a visual language based on form, its transformations, and its shifts, while incorporating an experimental dimension akin to scientific research. Through the study of the line, the square, and a deliberately limited palette— black, white, gray, but also blue and red—she introduces variations and disruptions that give rise to the unexpected and a true formal freedom.
For Art Basel 2026, the Oniris Gallery is presenting an ambitious solo exhibition conceived as a tribute to the work of Vera Molnar. The selection highlights her relationship with abstract geometry as well as her computer-generated drawings from the 1970s, now considered precursors to contemporary digital practices, notably NFTs.
This exceptional contribution underscores the enduring relevance of and affirms Oniris’s role as a committed advocate for the recognition of pioneers in digital art and the promotion of artistic forms at the intersection of art, science, and technology.
