Overview

Opened in September 1986 in Rennes with an exhibition by François Morellet, the Oniris gallery will celebrate forty years of activity in the summer of 2026. To mark the occasion, the gallery will present an anniversary exhibition bringing together a selection of works by artists who have left their mark on these four decades of collaboration.

Founded in Rennes by Yvonne Paumelle with an inaugural exhibition dedicated to François Morellet, the Oniris Gallery has established itself over the decades as a major player in the contemporary art scene in Brittany and France. For forty years, it has developed a discerning program focused on painting, abstraction, conceptual art, and the most innovative contemporary practices.

To mark this anniversary, the exhibition offers a journey through four decades of artistic creation, presenting iconic works by emblematic artists who have contributed to the gallery’s identity. This selection reflects the richness of the artistic dialogues forged over the years and highlights the major aesthetic directions that have shaped the Oniris project.

Among the artists associated with the gallery’s history are Vera Molnar, Aurélie Nemours, Geneviève Asse, Norman Dilworth, Christian Bonnefoi, Alain Clément, Philippe Cognée, Jean-Pierre Pincemin, and Claude Viallat.

Since 2012, under the direction of Florent Paumelle, the gallery has continued its commitment to established artists and new generations of creators, reaffirming its dedication to introducing the public to the many forms of contemporary art.

This anniversary exhibition offers a unique opportunity to rediscover forty years of exhibitions, encounters, and artistic collaborations that have contributed to the reputation of the Oniris Gallery, now recognized as one of the leading contemporary art galleries in Rennes.

    Viallat at Bois Orcan

    15 km from Rennes April 4 > Nov. 1, 2026
The Château du Bois Orcan will reopen its doors in 2026 with a special exhibition dedicated to contemporary artist Claude Viallat, a leading figure of the Supports/Surfaces movement. From April 4 to November 1, 2026, nearly fifty recent works will be presented in a unique exhibition layout at the heart of the medieval estate, which has been restored after 35 years of work. This exhibition marks Claude Viallat’s return to Bois Orcan, twenty-two years after he created the stained-glass windows of the Saint-Julien Chapel, visible as soon as you enter the site. The artist is now taking over the restored spaces as part of a carte blanche conceived in dialogue with the architecture and history of the site.
